Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) has released a new report titled “Fog of War: How the Ukraine Conflict Transformed the Cyber Threat Landscape” in collaboration with Mandiant and Trust & Safety. The report highlights the role of cyber operations in the ongoing Ukraine conflict and provides insights into government-backed attackers, information operations, and cybercriminal ecosystem threat actors. The report also includes threat actor deep-dives focused on specific campaigns from 2022. The findings suggest that the Russian government-backed attackers have engaged in an aggressive, multi-pronged effort to gain a decisive wartime advantage in cyberspace, while Moscow has leveraged the full spectrum of information operations to shape public perception of the war. The report may benefit cybersecurity, information governance, and eDiscovery professionals as it provides critical information to prepare better defenses for future cyber attacks.
