Repario, the JLL Partners-backed eDiscovery and legal data company, acquired UnitedLex, an alternative legal services provider reporting over 2,000 professionals. Control Risks said it will spin off its Discovery + Data Insights and Forensics lines into a standalone company backed by a Beringer Capital investment, a transaction announced Oct. 15 and expected to close in the fourth quarter. Epiq added Canopy, a data breach response software company, its third deal of the year, while Elevate’s Lupl purchase and Mitratech’s BotDojo purchase kept AI software in the mix. The pace trails 2025, which had logged 19 events by the same date, and annualizes to roughly 19, a mechanical rate rather than a forecast.
For cybersecurity, privacy, compliance and eDiscovery professionals, consolidation at this scale moves contracts, hosting and service teams: change-of-control and data portability terms deserve review before renewal, and cross-border clients of the Control Risks businesses should track jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction closings.
Watch next for the spin-off’s expected completion and for whether year-end announcements carry 2026 toward its predecessors’ totals. The tracker, whose earliest entry turns 25 on Nov. 5, now documents 625 events.

Reset, shift or maturation: what 2026’s 16 eDiscovery deals suggest so far

The midyear question was which niche would draw the next bid. The autumn answered with something bigger than a niche. eDiscovery dealmakers announced 16 mergers, acquisitions and investments through Oct. 29, 2026, trailing the 19 recorded by the same date in 2025, according to ComplexDiscovery tracking data.
The pace firmed in the second half. Annualized, the 16-deal count points toward roughly 19 transactions for the year, up from the 17-deal run rate the tracker showed in July and within reach of the 21 deals recorded in each of 2025 and 2022. That figure remains a mechanical run rate rather than a forecast; announcements do not arrive evenly through the year, and 2026 has already produced two zero-deal months, in April and May.
The tracker behind those counts uses a broad market definition. It records publicly announced transactions involving organizations that offer eDiscovery capabilities somewhere within their software or services portfolios, whether or not discovery is the primary business, and it is not exhaustive because some transactions are never publicly disclosed. Event dates reflect public announcements except where the tracker records an effective date. Two entries, Elevate’s purchase of Lupl and Mitratech’s purchase of BotDojo, were added to the tracker during prepublication review. Here is what the late summer and autumn added to the ledger.
Seven deals since the July update
August ended the summer lull. Elevate announced its acquisition of Lupl, an AI-native legal matter management platform, on Aug. 19, pushing the company deeper into software. September then delivered the year’s busiest month, with four announcements. Consilio announced its acquisition of icourts, an Australian eDiscovery specialist, on Sept. 1, extending its Asia-Pacific footprint. Epiq followed on Sept. 25 with Canopy, a data breach response software company whose AI-assisted review platform is set to be integrated into Epiq’s cyber incident response offerings. That capability carries direct relevance for privacy and information governance teams that manage breach notification. The month closed with two announcements on Sept. 28. Mitratech, a legal and compliance software provider, acquired BotDojo, an AI-native startup. Repario, the eDiscovery and legal data company backed by JLL Partners, acquired UnitedLex, the alternative legal services provider that reports over 2,000 legal and business professionals, data analysts, technologists and engineers across operational centers worldwide.
October kept the rhythm. Lineal acquired Forentec, a Swiss eDiscovery and digital forensics consultancy, on Oct. 14, its second tracker entry in about 14 months, following ProFile Discovery in August 2025. One day later came the announcement that tests the midyear outlook most directly: Control Risks said it will spin off two business lines, Discovery + Data Insights and Forensics, into a new standalone company backed by a Beringer Capital investment. Control Risks says it will keep a meaningful equity stake in the business. That transaction is announced, not closed: the companies expect it to complete in the fourth quarter, subject to customary conditions, with closings proceeding jurisdiction by jurisdiction.
David Moran, chief executive of Repario, said in his company’s acquisition announcement that there have been concerns that using AI in legal work means giving up control of data, visibility into the process and confidence that results will hold up. He said the combined company aims to move clients to case strategy sooner, with AI they can defend. Renee Meisel, chief executive of UnitedLex, said the deal speeds the company’s ability to put its existing AI investment to work and deepens its talent, and said the combination preserves the continuity and service quality clients expect.
Autumn broadens the announced mix
The late-summer and autumn additions landed in a year that, at midyear, read as two themes. AI capability purchases paired Relativity with Gavel, HaystackID with eDiscovery AI and Epiq with LitLingo, while legal talent additions joined Purpose Legal with Hire Counsel, Elevate with Mestel & Co. and Epiq with Tenor Legal. Both themes still stand. What changed is what joined them.
The new mix kept the AI thread running through the Lupl and BotDojo purchases, then added services consolidation at platform scale, cyber response software, cross-border forensics reach and, in the Control Risks announcement, a private-equity-backed carve-out. The July analysis in these pages had said that, if the year-to-date pattern persisted, additional AI and talent purchases might be likelier than a large platform combination, an outlook it called tentative on a nine-event sample. The caution was warranted. The Repario and UnitedLex combination is a platform-scale services pairing, and the Control Risks spin-off, if it closes as expected, would put fresh private equity behind a global investigations and eDiscovery business.
Serial acquirers kept shaping the flow. Epiq has announced three 2026 transactions, adding Canopy to LitLingo in March and Tenor Legal in July. Harbor holds two, CE Global Partners in June and iTrain in July, and Elevate holds two as well, adding Lupl in August to Mestel & Co. in February. Consolidation also kept running in both directions: the tracker’s 2025 entries include Epiq’s divestiture of a business transformation unit, and the Control Risks announcement extends that carve-out pattern into 2026. All of it is happening at a pace still below recent annual totals, inside a market projected to keep growing.
A slower deal year, a market projected to grow
ComplexDiscovery’s eDiscovery Marketplace Mashup Model sizes the worldwide eDiscovery market at about $19.61 billion for 2025 and projects about $28.08 billion by 2030, a reconciled compound annual growth rate near 7.44 percent. The Model reconciles outside analyst research with vendor disclosures and industry reference sources; it is not primary research.
The Model’s segment arithmetic tracks the deal mix. Software is projected to grow at about 10.41 percent annually, lifting its share of the market from 34 percent in 2025 to 39 percent by 2030, while services grow at about 5.75 percent and remain the larger segment. Deal counts and market dollars measure different things, and a transaction count says nothing by itself about demand. Read together, though, the figures and the ledger point the same way: buyers adding the faster-growing software and AI layer, and part of the larger, slower-growing services base combining into bigger platforms.
eDiscovery Market Sizing – Past and Projected – 2026
The record approaches a quarter century
The 2026 activity extends a data set that reaches back to an early period of commercial eDiscovery consolidation. ComplexDiscovery has tracked publicly announced eDiscovery mergers, acquisitions and investments since November 2001, beginning with the LexisNexis acquisition of CourtLink, and the compilation now documents 625 events. On Nov. 5, one week after this update, the record’s earliest entry turns 25.
The five full years before 2026 still frame the current market: 55 transactions in 2021, then 21, 35, 23 and 21, for a total of 155 events and a 62 percent fall from peak to trough. The 16 deals recorded so far in 2026 sit outside that total. The compilation is not all-inclusive, its methodology notes, because many organizations do not disclose transaction details.
What the new deals mean for practitioners
For legal, cybersecurity and information governance professionals, the latest moves raise familiar questions at larger scale. Clients of an acquired provider should ask for specifics on integration plans, product support commitments and hosting arrangements, and confirm change-of-control and data portability provisions before renewal. Organizations with managed services or managed review engagements at a combining provider should also ask how staffing, pricing and service levels carry across the new owner. The Control Risks structure adds a wrinkle worth tracking. Because closings proceed jurisdiction by jurisdiction, engagement letters and data processing agreements may move to a new contracting entity on different dates in different countries. Teams with active cross-border matters should confirm which entity holds their work as the transaction moves through its closings.
Two months remain, and the run rate points toward a third consecutive year below the five-year average of 31 events, though nearer the 21-deal totals of 2022 and 2025 than the midyear pace implied. The expected fourth-quarter close of the Control Risks spin-off is the nearest known milestone to watch, and whether unannounced negotiations surface before Dec. 31 is the open variable.
July’s question was which niche would draw the next bid before year’s end. The year answered with niches and platforms alike, and the answer sharpened the question this coverage has carried since the 2021 peak: reset, structural shift or maturation. As the record’s earliest entry turns 25 next week, which of those readings will 2027 settle?
