What is Bankruptcy Week?
The sessions in Bankruptcy Week will be given by industry experts and leading professionals regarding the state of bankruptcy law, including impacts already seen from the current pandemic.
Topics will also help attorneys looking to add bankruptcy law to their practice for the first time. It’s a great time to pick up this extra law area to help more clients in need and grow your practice.
The attorneys and legal professionals giving the sessions will go over how to file bankruptcies, best practices for business bankruptcies, payment offerings like bifurcation, and the bankruptcy code. Tech companies and research leaders will also provide information about using the right solutions for bankruptcy practices.
Bankruptcy Week Summit schedule
Monday, May 11:
- 11am: Opening Keynote with Janine Sickmeyer. The first Bankruptcy Week session is from Janine Sickmeyer, founder of NextChapter. She’ll cover what the bankruptcy industry looks like in our current climate.
- 2pm: Bankruptcy Basics with Ron Drescher. In this session, Ron Drescher covers all the basics of bankruptcy for new practitioners.
- 4pm: Fireside Chat: The Future of Law with Ed Walters. The summit’s first fireside chat will be from Ed Walters, who will be discussing what he thinks the future looks like for the legal world.
Tuesday, May 12:
- 12pm: Chapter 13 Bankruptcies with Athena Inembolidis . This session will cover Chapter 13 bankruptcy basics and adding this practice to your law firm, from experienced attorney Athena Inembolidis.
- 2pm: Women of Legal Tech Panel with Jess Birken and Ivy Grey. These two female leaders will discuss women who have had lasting impacts on the legal tech industry.
- 5pm: Happy Hour Chat: Social Media & Law Firm Culture with Jordan Couch. In a fun and informative happy hour chat, Jordan Couch will go over why social media and culture matter for your practice or law firm.
Wednesday, May 13:
- 11am: Business Bankruptcies with Tara Salinas. Tara Salinas provides an in-depth look at Chapter 11 and 7 cases specifically. These filings continue to increase for businesses.
- 2pm: Working with a Bankruptcy Paralegal with Mandy Ballinger. Paralegals are a crucial part of the bankruptcy process, and Mandy Ballinger, a former paralegal, is here to tell you why.
- 4pm: Refine Your Law Firm Strategy with Stephanie Everett. When you need the right tools and practices to streamline your law firm, Stephanie Everett offers advice and guidance in this session.
Thursday, May 14:
- 12pm: Bifurcated Bankruptcies with Matt Hartley. This session from Matt Hartley provides all the info you need to start offering bifurcated bankruptcies to your clients in need.
- 3pm: Marketing Your Law Firm with Jim Christy. Jim Christy offers important information about marketing both your practice and your new bankruptcy offering in this session.
- 5pm: A Conversation with Bankruptcy Trustee Mark Little. In this informational discussion, you’ll learn tips and advice from a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Trustee’s perspective.
Friday, May 15:
- 11am: BK Books & Fastcase with Erin Page. When you’re learning bankruptcy law, you need books and legal research resources to help you out. In this session, Erin Page helps you know where to find all the educational assistance you need.
- 2pm: Bankruptcy Systems and Workflows with Ron Drescher. When you’re launching your new practice area, you need the right systems and workflows to support you. This session from attorney Ron Drescher covers just that.
- 4pm: Closing Keynote with Jack Newton. Learn what the current bankruptcy and legal tech industries look like with Jack Newton, in this final session of the Bankruptcy Week Summit.
Bankruptcy Week Speakers
Speakers and presenters include experts in both the legal and tech industries. Here’s who you’ll be hearing from during the week-long summit:
- Jack Newton: CEO and Founder, Clio. Jack Newton is author of The Client-Centered Law Firm, was named Entrepreneur of the Year by EY, and continues to educate the legal community on topics like cloud storage, ethics, and privacy.
- Ed Walters: CEO and Founder, Fastcase. Ed Walters teaches tech and law classes as an adjunct at Georgetown, and is a member of the Virginia State Bar. Under Ed’s leadership, the legal publisher Fastcase has grown to have over 900,000 subscribers worldwide.
- Ronald J. Drescher, Esq.: Managing Attorney, Drescher & Associates, P.A. Ron Drescher has practiced bankruptcy law since 1985. He is the author of many books and articles and has more than 150 five-star reviews on Google and Avvo.com. He regularly posts videos about bankruptcy on his YouTube channel.
- Ivy Grey: Vice President of Strategy & Business Development for WordRake. Ivy Grey was named one of the 2020 Influential Women in legal Tech by the International Legal Technology Association. She is currently on the WordRake team and practiced bankruptcy law for ten years prior.
- Matt Hartley, Esq.: Co-Founder and Managing Director, Fresh Start Funding. Matt Hartley saw a need for attorneys to offer better financing solutions for their clients and started Fresh Start Funding. He continues to be a leading expert in bifurcation.
- Jim Christy: CEO, Postali. Jim Christy assists law firms in implementing a marketing strategy that flows with current law firm operations. He has nearly ten years of experience assisting law firms in the growth process.
- Stephanie Everett: President at Lawyerist. Stephanie Everett is an author and presenter who focuses on law firm operations. She co-founded her own firm and currently runs the Lawyerist community and Lawyerist Lab.

- Jordan Couch: Partner and Culture Ambassador, Palace Law. An attorney practicing in Washington, Jordan Couch works primarily with personal injury and workers’ comp clients.
- Erin M. Page, Esq.: Senior Law Librarian and Reference Attorney, Fastcase. With prior experience as a CLE coordinator, company trainer, and insurance mediation lawyer, Erin Page is now the reference attorney and senior law librarian at the legal research company, Fastcase.
- Mandy Ballinger: Director of Operations, NextChapter. Mandy Ballinger previously worked in the bankruptcy and foreclosure law areas and is now in charge of daily operations for NextChapter.
